What Should You Ask an Architect Before Hiring Them?

4 min read·Last reviewed June 2026·Source: BazaEngineer Knowledge Centre

Have you designed similar projects before? Ask to see examples of homes similar in size, budget, or plot type to yours.

What is included in your fee? Clarify whether concept design, detailed drawings, permit-ready documentation, and site visits during construction are all included, or billed separately.

How many design revisions are included? Design is iterative — know upfront how many rounds of changes are covered before extra charges apply.

Will you coordinate with the structural engineer? Architectural and structural drawings need to align; ask how that coordination will happen and who is responsible for resolving conflicts.

What is your estimated timeline? Get a realistic sense of how long concept design and final drawings will take, and what could extend it.

Can I speak to a past client? A short conversation with a previous client often reveals more than a portfolio alone.
